Critical to the effectiveness of Pax World’s Sustainable Investing process is a group of talented, committed Sustainability researchers under the direction of Dr. Julie Gorte, Senior Vice President for Sustainable Investing. It is their responsibility to conduct a comprehensive sustainability analyses of any of the companies our Portfolio Managers may have an interest in in order to gauge their performance relative to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards. Only those companies that meet our criteria may be considered for investment.

The members of the Sustainability Research Team are:

Julie Gorte, Ph.D
Senior Vice President for Sustainable Investing

Julie Fox Gorte, Ph.D. is the Senior Vice President for Sustainable Investing at Pax World Management LLC. She oversees Environmental, Social and Governance-related research on prospective and current investments as well as Pax’s shareholder advocacy and work on public policy advocacy. 

Dr. Gorte serves on the boards of Ceres, the Center for a New American Dream, the Endangered Species Coalition and the Pinchot Institute. She serves as the co-chair of the Asset Management Working Group of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiatives and is on the steering committee for UNEP’s workstream on biodiversity. Dr. Gorte served as a member of the Adaptation and Response Working Group of the Maryland Climate Commission.

Prior to joining Pax, Dr. Gorte served as Vice President and Chief Social Investment Strategist at Calvert. Her experience before she joined the investment world in 1999 includes nearly 14 years as Senior Associate and Project Director at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Vice President for Economic and Environmental Research at The Wilderness Society, Program Manager for Technology Programs in the Environmental Protection Agency’s policy office and Senior Associate at the Northeast-Midwest Institute. Dr. Gorte received her Bachelor of Science in Forest Management at Northern Arizona University and a Master of Science and Ph.D from Michigan State in resource economics. 

David Loehwing
Director, Sustainability Research

David Loehwing is Director, Sustainability Research at Pax World Management LLC. He is responsible for Environmental, Social, and Governance-related research on prospective and current investments, and is involved in Pax World’s efforts to promote sustainable business practices through stakeholder engagement. Mr. Loehwing is also a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Advisory Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility (ACCSR) and the Sustainable Investment Research Analyst Network’s (SIRAN) steering committee.

Mr. Loehwing has worked in the sustainable investing field since 1998. Before joining Pax World in 2007, Mr. Loehwing served a senior social research analyst at Citizens Advisers from 2002 to 2007, and as a senior account manager at the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC) from 1998 to 2001. Mr. Loehwing is a graduate of Bowdoin College.

Heather Smith
Lead Sustainability Research Analyst

Heather Smith is the Lead Sustainability Research Analyst at Pax World Management LLC. As such, she researches and evaluates the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of companies for inclusion in Pax World’s portfolio. She is also involved in overseeing Pax World’s proxy voting and coordinating the shareowner advocacy efforts of Pax World’s Global Women’s Equality Fund. Additionally, Ms. Smith is a member of the Sustainable Investment Research Analyst Network’s (SIRAN) steering committee. Ms. Smith received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and an M.B.A. from the University of New Hampshire.

Greg Hasevlat
Sustainability Research Analyst

Greg Hasevlat is a Sustainability Research Analyst at Pax World Management LLC. In this role, he is responsible for evaluating the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of companies for inclusion in Pax World’s portfolios. Prior to working at Pax World, Mr. Hasevlat was a Government Affairs Representative at The Demers Group. Mr. Hasevlat is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and is currently pursuing an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University.

Laura Huober
Sustainability Research Analyst

Laura Huober is a Sustainability Research Analyst at Pax World Management LLC. In this role, she is responsible for evaluating the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of companies for inclusion in Pax World’s portfolios. Ms. Huober's undergraduate thesis explored waste management in the urban center of Accra, Ghana. Through field research, she investigated the role of Accra’s informal recycling network in conserving natural resources and examined how the network could better be supported. Ms. Huober received a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Amherst College.

Corey Johnson
Sustainability Research Analyst

Corey Johnson is a Sustainability Research Analyst at Pax World Management LLC. In this role, he is responsible for evaluating the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of companies for inclusion in Pax World’s portfolios. Prior to joining Pax World, Mr. Johnson worked for Clean Air-Cool Planet and Climate Counts to address sustainability issues ranging from municipal energy use to corporate climate impacts. He has also studied a wide range of business and sustainability issues which led to his senior thesis on sustainability in higher education. Mr. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems Management and a minor in sustainable living from the University of New Hampshire.
